Camp H.E.R.O. Counselor

"The best prize life has to offer is a chance to work hard at work worth doing, and I would add that what makes work worth doing is getting to do it with people you love." -Leslie Knope (& Theodore Roosevelt)

About My Experience

Camp H.E.R.O. aims to focus on Health, Esteem, Recreational Opportunities and is run through the Bryan Parks and Recreation Department. This was my second year as a camp counselor for the seven and eight year old group and it was so wonderful to see how they had grown over the past year. Before camp started we had two weeks of training where we got to know the other counselors, learned the rules of camp, and learned about the games we would be playing at camp. This year I was a morning counselor and I was expected to check-in my group, supervise morning free play, and take up lunches. We would then have our daily meeting and go outside for a snack and playtime. After that on Mondays and Wednesdays we would either go to clubs (I was in charge of teaching Yoga Club) and play games in our groups. Twice a week we took the camp to Henderson Harbor, where I was a lifeguard for camp. On Thursdays we would take the kids on a field trip to the movies, ice skating, Franklin Safari (picture on the right), and many other exciting places! Once lunch is over the morning staff does their designated clean up duty and our lead counselor would have a brief meeting with us about the morning. Overall, I learned a lot about customer service for both the parents and the kids that we served. I cannot imagine having a better group of people to have worked with that could've made camp as great as it was!

Achievements

There were great opportunities at work to work extra  hours and as mentioned before to get three different certifications. Another great opportunity is to be involved in other parts of the parks and recreation department like special events and volunteer opportunities.

Working my second year at camp H.E.R.O. with the seven and eight year olds, I learned a lot about myself and about the job. I became the head morning counselor for my group and was able to assign tasks in order to help our group run more efficiently. I also was able to gain new perspectives and develop new strategies to work with children who have disabilities and at times need specials attention.
